Out of the Woods

I remember your face under the pale moon light
The way it shined like a beacon in the night
Life stories crossing your lips so sweet
The world seemed to disappear underneath our feet
Before the bills, they got in the way
And all those harsh words we had to say
My how them days turn into years
And I'm so glad we're still here
One in diapers and another on the way
I never saw my teens ending this way
Love notes and eviction letters hanging from the door
Were we going to make it? Who's quite sure?
When young love yields to reality's pain
It's hard to get by, even harder to stay sane
Your grandfather said "Son just give it 5 years
It takes a little time before you get in the clear."
When the bills, they get in the way
And all those harsh words you have to say
My how them days turned into years
And I'm so glad we're still here
Yeah, there are times I'm glad we left behind
Making our ends meet in the welfare line
We've lived the worst, not we're living our best
No room to breathe, but a little time to rest
Yeah, the bills, they get in the way
And all those harsh words we have to say
But my how them days turned into years
And I'm so glad we're still here

Falling Back Down

|

Feels like my will just broke down again
Nothing seems to last these days anyway
I’ve got nothing to give, even less to gain
I know I’m no better than the curses you say
It’s all too familiar, cycling back around
Another casualty of this sad old town
Every time I get up off this ground
I end up falling back down
I’m always falling back down
The last paycheck’s spent, there’s nothing left to do
Such a sad state of affairs, no pride to hold onto
At the bottom, there’s just despair and you
I’m doing all I can not to fall right through
It’s all too familiar, cycling back around
Another casualty of this sad old town
Every time I get up off this ground
I end up falling back down
I’m always falling back down
Voicemails and endless rings sing me to sleep
Addiction-fueled nightmares where I once had dreams
When the pain you sow becomes the guilt you reap
It’s just another excuse to rip life apart at the seams
It’s all too familiar, cycling back around
Another casualty of this sad old town
Every time I get up off this ground
I end up falling back down
I’m always falling back down

Crystal Beach

They’re paving all the dirt roads
But they left this one alone
My trailer’s at the dead end
But it’s no place to call home
Shrimp boats and oil fields
The only jobs still around
When the tourists all pack up
And forget this little town
Winter months bring boredom
Until sun shines again
So I’m cooking up distraction
Until the payday ends
Yeah, this is just another small town
Where the edges get so hard to reach
Wasted away all my best years
Living out here on this crystal beach
Cough syrup and match books
Coffee filters, starter spray
It takes a special kind of poison
To survive this day to day
At the end of my dirt road
The heat never gets too high
Sheriff’s got bigger problems
Like the run-off this July
And momma keeps the children
But they never want or need
She hides behind her bible
Blocking things she shouldn’t see
Yeah, this is just another small town
Where the edges get so hard to reach
Wasted away all my best years
Living out here on this crystal beach
When a man gets greedy
Something’s always going wrong
A zig when you should zag
One spark and it’s all gone
Flames lit the night sky
If there’s a maker, we woulda met
Momma told the children
I fell asleep with a cigarette
Yeah, this is just another small town
Where the edges get so hard to reach
Wasted away all my best years
Living out here on this crystal beach

Closing Night
04:47
|
|||
He worked in those plants his whole damn life
Like his father and his brother, it's where he met his wife
Building those cars that America loves to drive
Now that it's shutting down, how the hell is he gonna survive
They gave him a severance, but it ain't gonna last
Everybody's leave town, hope ran out real fast
The whole community gave themselves to that old place
Now that company is pulling out so fast, you'd think they're running a race
Used to love the look of those factory lights shining in the sky so bright
Feels like the world is gonna end on closing night
An honest days living used to be every man's right
Now life don't look so good on closing night
Now he's got to go home, look at the kids
Tell them the life they've know, well now it's on the skids
Walk the streets, the places where he grew
Knowing deep down in his heart the old place was through
Paper ran a story, got everyone asking why
No one can believe it, seems middle America is going to die
People losing homes and jobs at such an alarming rate
You can't beat the king, because they got you in check-mate
Used to love the look of those factory lights shining in the sky so bright
Feels like the world is gonna end on closing night
An honest days living used to be every man's right
Now life don't look so good on closing night
He worked in those plants his whole damn life
Like his father and his brother, it's where he met his wife
The whole community gave themselves to that old place
Now that company is pulling out so fast, you'd think they were running a race

Elysian Falls
04:39

Snap to from a dead sleep
Frost on the pillow where she'd laid
Wish I could go back to dreaming
So she could take the chills away
I'd go to my job if I had one
But the factory closed last spring
I couldn't see past the county line
But she dreamt of bigger things
Some nights I swear
I can still hear her call
Saying that she's coming home
Back to Elysian Falls
I met her down at the falls
Summer before our senior year
Two naive young lovers
Who'd never tasted fear
I walked down to the banks today
Just to clear my mind
My friends say I should let her go
Leave those memories behind
But, some nights I swear
I can still hear her call
Saying that she's coming home
Back to Elysian Falls
There no fear like the clarity
Growing up seems to bring
To youthful ideas of innocence
We so desperately cling
They say when the tie that binds
Is worn as thin as a thread
It comes down to us or them
Guess she chose them instead
Some nights I swear
I can still hear her call
Saying that she's coming home
Back to Elysian Falls
